There are pieces that are assembled and there are pieces that are formed — where the material itself is shaped into the object rather than cut and joined into it. The Akari Side Table belongs to the second category entirely. A single continuous piece of wood bends from the floor, curves around the top corners with the considered grace of a material pushed to its most elegant possibility, and flows back down to the floor on the other side — the entire shell of the piece in one uninterrupted gesture. The grain of the timber runs through the darkness of the black stain, warm and visible at every edge, speaking to the honest making of a piece that trusted the wood to do everything the design required.

Within the open interior of the bent form, a color panel sits at the lower section — a shelf or drawer in a warm, considered paint that contrasts quietly against the wood surrounding it. The two-tone composition gives the Akari its graphic quality — the darkness of the bent shell framing the grey panel like a window frames a view — making the interior of the piece as considered as the exterior.
