Auerbach Stool

The stool that opened. And became something more.
There are stools that support and there are stools that make you look twice — that bring such considered sculptural form to a corner of the room that the act of sitting down feels like an interaction with an object worth noticing. The Auerbach was designed for that second kind of encounter. A generous cylinder of wood — the fine, vertical grain flowing around the curved surface with the consistency of a single continuous piece of timber — opens at the front in a considered split, the two edges curving softly away from each other to reveal the dark interior within. The opening references a flower calyx, a seed pod, a vessel that has gently parted — the negative space as considered as the form that surrounds it. A round linen cushion nests within the top of the cylinder with the precise fit of a piece designed from the inside out, a small fabric pull tab at the front the honest detail that tells you the cushion was designed to be removed and replaced with the same care that went into making it fit.
Wood carries the warmth and fine grain of honest timber around the full circumference of the cylinder — the grain shifting subtly as it curves, the natural colour of the grains making the linen appear more luminous for the warmth that surrounds it. The dark hollow interior gives the Auerbach its depth — the shadow within the split opening making the piece as interesting from every side as it is from the front.
