Each coaster is cut in the twelve-petal form of the marigold — rounded petals radiating outward from the centre in the flower's characteristic starburst — and the set alternates between deep walnut and light white ash, the two timbers stacking over a walnut knob base in a rhythm of dark and light that makes the set as beautiful assembled as it is in use. India's flower, in India's most honest materials, at the most considered scale.
Walnut brings the depth and richness of a dark timber to the coasters it covers — the deep brown of the petals making the white ash coasters beside them appear more luminous, and the ash making the walnut appear more warm. White ash brings the fine grain and natural brightness of honest timber to a form that was designed to be held as much as looked at — the marigold petals giving each coaster a tactile edge that rewards the hand as much as the eye.
